The author deals with both the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject and analyzes legal translation as an act of communication in the mechanism of law, which makes it necessary to redefine the purpose of legal translation. Emphasis is placed on translating texts that are authoritative sources of law; Examples come mainly from laws, codes and constitutions (Canada, Switzerland and Belgium) as well as from European Union instruments and international treaties and conventions.
